Desktop Management
for Digital Projectors and Televisions

Introduction

There are two primary ways of showing images from your computer on your projector: Clone and Dualview.

In Clone, you have one desktop on your computer monitor, and an exact clone of that desktop on your projector or television. In this case, the projector or television shows exactly what you see on your computer monitor. The act of making your computer do this is called "Cloning."

In Dualview, you have one desktop on your computer monitor, and then another separate desktop on your projector or television. To reach this second desktop, you drag your cursor off your monitor to one side, and onto the second desktop. This is also called an "Extended Desktop."

On many computers, you must first establish Clone before you can Dualview.

Setting Up Clone ("New" Desktops)

The method for establishing Clone on your school desktop computer is different depending on whether or not you have a "new" (circa 2008) computer or an "old" (circa 2004) computer. The new computers are black on the front and use a piece of control software called the Catalyst Control Center.

These instructions are for "new" computers that use the Catalyst Control Center. For other instructions, scroll down.

Step 1: Right click on your desktop. This context menu should appear:

Step 2a: Click "Catalyst Control Center." If this is the first time you have used the Catalyst Control Center on this particular computer, you may see the screen below:

Step 2b: Select "Advanced." Add a checkbox to "Don't show this page again." Then click "Next."
Step 2c: Add a checkbox to "Don't display this message again." Then click "Yes." The screen below should appear.

Step 3: From the list on the left hand side of the screen, select "Displays Manager." Once you've done this, you should see the screen above. Right click on Screen 2 on the right hand side, and click Enable. The screen may go dark for a moment, and then this screen should appear:

Note: If Screen 2 does not turn blue with a white 2, as pictured above, but instead is still gray and dim, your physical hardware connections are probably not correct. Click here to go to the Projector / Television Connections help page.

Step 4: Select "Yes."

Step 4a: This step is for Television users only. Locate the "Desktop area:" setting just to the right of the large red "ATI Radeon Graphics" badge, pictured above. Using the drop-down menu, select "800x600," then click "Apply" at the bottom of the screen.

Projector users, continue to Step 5.

Step 5a: You should now see two orange-screen monitor images, under Desktop 1 and Desktop 2 respectively, pictured below.

Step 5b: Right click the orange-screen monitor icon underneath Desktop 2. From the context menu that appears, as shown above, select Clone Desktop 1 with monitor. The below screen should appear.
Step 6: Select "Yes." The screen below should appear now on both your computer monitor and your projector or television.
If you now have your desktops set up as you desire, click "OK" to accept these settings and you are finished.

If you would like to use Dualview to have two separate desktops, continue on to the next section below.

Setting up Dualview ("New" Desktops)

Step 7: Once again, right click the orange-screened monitor icon, which now is located underneath the word "Clone," as shown below. Click "Extend Main onto monitor."

Step 8: The screen may go dark for a moment. Then you should see the screen below on just your computer monitor. Your projector or television will display the wallpaper of your desktop. On most school computers this is either a solid blue screen or a picture of a meadow and a sky.

Step 9: Click "Yes."

If the above steps did not result in the desktop management that you desire, you will need to pursue technical support from Mr. Binsted, the Technical Support Specialist (TSSpec) for Battlefield. His extension is 4460.

You may also consider, as a backup, contacting your department's Technology Committee representative.

Setting up Clone or Dualview ("Old" Desktops)

The method for establishing Clone on your school desktop computer is different depending on whether or not you have a "new" (circa 2008) computer or an "old" (circa 2004) computer. The old computers are silver on the front and use a piece of control software called NVIDIA nView.

These instructions are for "old" computers that use NVIDIA nView.

Step 1: Right click on your desktop. This context menu should appear:

Step 2: Move your cursor over "NVIDIA Display." Click whichever option is first in the list that appears. Your text may be different than that in the image above. The nView program should open, as shown below:

Step 3: From the list on the left hand side of the screen, select "nView Display Settings." Your screen should then look like the image above. Find the setting labeled "nView Display Mode:" on the right. Using that drop-down menu, select either Clone or Dualview, depending on your preference, as shown below. Then Click "OK."

Note: If your screen does not have multiple monitors pictures, as shown above, your physical hardware connections are probably not correct. Click here to go to the Projector / Television Connections help page.

If the above steps did not result in the desktop management that you desire, you will need to pursue technical support from Mr. Binsted, the Technical Support Specialist (TSSpec) for Battlefield. His extension is 4460.

You may also consider, as a backup, contacting your department's Technology Committee representative.
