Families Anonymous
If your child has a drug, alcohol, or behavioral problem, can you see what it's doing to you? Are you at your wits' end? Do you need help in coping? Is someone you love destroying family harmony? Free and effective help exists. Families Anonymous offers free help and free weekly meetings close to your home!
Families Anonymous is a non-profit fellowship requiring no dues or fees. FA is self-supporting through voluntary contributions and the sale of FA's published literature. Families Anonymous is not affiliated with any religion or institution.
Meetings are held each Thursday evening from 8:30 PM until 9:30 PM at Manassas Baptist Church, 8730 Sudley Road, Manassas, VA 20110. (Phone: 703.670.4423, in the old Marsteller school building, Room 24.)
Student Assistance Program
Ms. A-T works with students at risk for or already suffering academic trouble due to home or personal problems of a substance or psychological nature. Her job is to help students be more successful in school and in relationships with peers, teachers, drugs, or academic subjects. She forms education and support groups to deal with baggage they may bring to school that interferes with their school performance or safe school management. Groups may also include grief, social (resiliency) skills, diversity inclusion, and/or leadership skills.
You may refer students to her solely for the purpose of assessment of a problem. You do not need to know what the problem is only that things tried in the educational realm have not worked or are clearly outside the classroom arena. Because she works under confidentiality laws, she is able to find out things that a student is afraid to tell anyone else. The laws, however, include notable exceptions for dangerousness, breaking the law (not including drug use), breaking a school code (including drugs on school property), pregnancy, and/or child abuse.
Mrs. A-T only attends Battlefield 1-2 days a week. Those students whose primary need is behavioral structuring may be assessed and referred to more appropriate interventions. She works in cooperation with Guidance, Administration, and New Horizons, who do not duplicate efforts in order to reach as many students as possible and provide the most support for teachers, students, and parents.
Before a child may attend a group, a parent must sign a permission slip; however, a student can voluntarily see Ms. A-T individually for a brief time. Ms. A-T is very willing to communicate with parents and will call or email a parent back and involves them as much as possible, understanding that denial is always an ingredient in addictions, and addictions are often part of violence and unplanned activities. Confidentiality extends to referral sources including parents and teachers. Once weekly groups are set up, the periods are rotated so a student will normally miss only one of each class per month. Students are required to make up any work missed.
Ms. A-T has a Master's in Clinical Psychology, and over 30 years specialization in dual diagnoses, addictive disease, and mood disorders. Funding for the program is through the federal Drug Free and Safe Schools Act.
